Tinubu Directs Development of Roadmap for Nigeria’s Digital Free Zones
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Government to develop a roadmap for the full launch of Nigeria’s Digital Free Zones initiative within 180 days.
The initiative is designed to create a more supportive environment for technology and service companies operating in Nigeria, with a focus on helping them access international markets and attract global investment.
Under the directive, the government is expected to develop a clear framework for implementing the Digital Free Zones programme, which is intended to make it easier for Nigerian technology companies and service providers to raise global capital, create jobs for Nigerians and build products and services for international markets.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy and position the country as a competitive destination for technology-driven businesses.
Digital Free Zones are expected to provide an enabling environment where eligible businesses can operate under streamlined regulatory and investment frameworks, potentially reducing some of the barriers faced by companies seeking to scale beyond the Nigerian market.
The 180-day timeline gives relevant government agencies a defined period to establish the framework required for the initiative’s full rollout.
The move is also expected to support the growth of Nigeria’s technology ecosystem by creating opportunities for local companies to participate more actively in the global digital economy while generating employment and attracting international capital.
The Federal Government is expected to provide further details on the roadmap, including the agencies responsible for implementation, eligibility requirements and the operational framework for the Digital Free Zones.
