Enugu Govt Alleges Plot to Import Armed Thugs Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Enugu State Government has alleged that some opposition elements are planning to bring armed thugs and bandits into the state to cause panic ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, made the allegation while commenting on recent incidents involving the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the party’s state secretariat.

Onyia said the confrontation at the airport occurred after the party allegedly failed to secure approval from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for a planned campaign rally.

He also confirmed that the police were investigating a shooting at the NDC state secretariat, where a 43-year-old man sustained gunshot injuries.

The government, however, disputed reports that the incident resulted in fatalities, insisting that claims of deaths were inaccurate.

Onyia denied any government involvement in either incident, maintaining that the administration was committed to maintaining peace and security in the state.

The state government urged political parties and their supporters to conduct peaceful, issue-based campaigns as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
