A medical doctor abducted in Auchi, Edo State, has regained his freedom after spending weeks in captivity, according to local authorities and media reports. Dr. Ibrahim Abu Babatunde was kidnapped alongside his younger brother, Abu Tahir, on January 2, 2026.
Dr. Babatunde was released after his family reportedly paid a N50 million ransom following prolonged negotiations with the kidnappers. The ransom was said to have been paid in two tranches of N20 million and N30 million, raised through contributions from family members, friends, organisations and other well-wishers.
Tragically, his younger brother, Abu Tahir; a newly graduated medical doctor was allegedly killed by the abductors on January 5. His body was later discovered near the Orle River in the Igbira Camp area of Auchi.
Reports indicate that Dr. Babatunde sustained a gunshot injury to his leg during the ordeal and is currently receiving medical treatment.
Confirming the development, the Edo State Police Command on Thursday, January 15, 2026, said Dr. Babatunde has been reunited with his family.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage within the medical community. Earlier, the Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) had threatened industrial action over the rising cases of kidnapping targeting healthcare workers in the state.
This further reinforces the need for increased security measures to protect the lives of citizens in Nigeria.
