BREAKING: Police Confirm Kidnappings in Kaduna After Earlier Denial
The Nigerian Police have confirmed that armed gunmen abducted villagers in Kurmin Wali, Kaduna State, reversing earlier claims that no such incident had occurred, according to officials and eyewitnesses.
The confirmation came after security agencies reviewed intelligence and operational reports that established that villagers were indeed kidnapped.
The incident followed coordinated attacks on churches over the weekend, during which armed bandits reportedly invaded worship services and abducted worshippers. Initial statements by local police had dismissed the reports as rumours, drawing sharp criticism from community leaders and human rights groups.
National Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the earlier denial was aimed at “preventing unnecessary panic” while authorities verified the facts. He added that investigations have since confirmed the abductions and that security operatives are working to locate and rescue the victims safely.
Local lawmakers and community representatives in Kaduna estimate that more than 160 people were taken during the attacks, with many still missing. Police officials say the figures may change as investigations continue. The incident underscores persistent security challenges in parts of northwest Nigeria, where armed groups routinely target rural communities for ransom and intimidation.
