Deadly Airstrike and U.S. Security Alert Trigger Emergency Meeting at Presidential Villa
Nigeria’s top security leadership convened an urgent closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa following a deadly military airstrike in the northeast and heightened concerns sparked by a recent U.S. security advisory.
The high-level session brought together the Chief of Defence Staff, service chiefs, intelligence heads, and the Inspector-General of Police to assess the worsening security landscape, according to officials familiar with the discussions.
The meeting comes days after a Nigerian Air Force operation targeting insurgents struck Jilli Market along the Borno–Yobe border, reportedly killing a large number of civilians. Estimates from Amnesty International and local sources suggest the death toll has surpassed 100, with some reports indicating it could be as high as 200.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and renewed scrutiny of military operations in the region, where past air raids have raised concerns over civilian protection, intelligence accuracy, and operational coordination.
Tensions have been further heightened by a recent move by the United States Embassy in Nigeria to authorize the departure of non-essential staff from Abuja, citing security risks. The development signals growing international concern about Nigeria’s current security climate.
The airstrike occurred amid ongoing counterinsurgency efforts against extremist groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province, which continue to launch attacks across the northeast.
Security analysts say the emergency meeting reflects mounting pressure on the government to strengthen operational oversight, improve intelligence gathering, and minimize civilian casualties, while maintaining momentum in the fight against insurgency.
The Presidency has yet to release a detailed statement on the outcomes of the meeting, but officials indicate that efforts are underway to review existing strategies and prevent further loss of civilian lives.
