One of the most important things to look for when choosing a life partner is kindness and proactiveness. These two qualities matter more than many people realise — and as a doctor, I have seen firsthand why they are so important.

Beyond attraction, money, and sweet words, choose someone who will show up, take responsibility, and act in your best interest when you cannot do so for yourself. Life can place either of you in a vulnerable position, and when that happens, the person standing beside you will matter more than you ever imagined.

Choose someone whose love does not merely shine in the sunshine of life, but stands firm in the storms. Someone whose affection is not just spoken in moments of joy, but demonstrated in moments of pain, vulnerability and uncertainty.

Choose someone who will hold your hand when the world feels overwhelming, look you in the eyes and say, “I’ve got you. You are not alone.” 💕

Choose someone who will not leave you weeping in a hospital corridor, abandoned in your hour of need, or so neglected that strangers must step in to explain the seriousness of your condition. Choose someone who will not turn their back on their own children — in words or in actions — as though their wellbeing means nothing.
For life is unpredictable.

Today, you may be the strong one; tomorrow, you may be the one who needs to be carried. And when that day comes, you will discover that the true measure of love is not in the promises made when life is beautiful, but in the responsibility, compassion and courage shown when life becomes difficult.
