Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu Resigns
Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from office, marking a significant development in the leadership of the country’s power sector.
In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, Adelabu confirmed that his exit will take effect on April 30, 2026. He said the decision is to enable him fully pursue his ambition to contest the governorship of Oyo State.
The move comes just weeks after he publicly dismissed reports suggesting his resignation, a development that has now sparked renewed questions and controversy over the earlier conflicting statements.
In the letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Adelabu expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council, describing his appointment as a rare privilege.
He added that stepping down at this time would ensure a smooth transition in the ministry while allowing him to refocus on his long-standing political ambition, which he traced back to 2016 during his tenure at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The earlier denial by the minister and his media team, who had described similar reports as fake, has now raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the shift in position and whether it reflects evolving political considerations.
