RMAFC Disowns ‘Misleading’ Oil Well Dispute Claim as Commissioner Deletes Facebook Post
The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has distanced itself from a controversial claim made by one of its commissioners regarding the status of a technical report on disputed oil wells, describing the statement as misleading and not representative of the Commission’s position.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Commission clarified that the report in question has not been discarded, contrary to assertions made in a now-deleted Facebook post by the commissioner. The clarification comes amid heightened public interest and political sensitivity surrounding oil well ownership disputes, which have long influenced revenue allocation among oil-producing states.
The Commission emphasized that the technical report remains a critical document in ongoing consultations and decision-making processes. It reiterated its commitment to due process, transparency, and fairness in resolving disputes tied to oil well derivation, noting that such matters require careful review guided by law and established procedures.
RMAFC further noted that the commissioner’s social media post was made in a personal capacity and did not reflect the official stance of the agency. The Commission also confirmed that the post has since been deleted.
Oil well disputes in Nigeria have historically triggered tensions between states, particularly in the Niger Delta, where derivation revenues form a significant portion of state income. The handling of such reports is therefore closely watched by stakeholders, including state governments, industry players, and civil society groups.
