FG Approves N70,000 Monthly Transport Allowance for Workers for Six Months
The Federal Government has approved a monthly transport allowance of N70,000 for public service workers across all levels for six months, beginning in November 2026, as part of efforts to ease the burden of rising living costs.
The approval was reached on Tuesday, October 27, during a conciliation meeting between the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja, where both parties discussed workers’ welfare, the rising cost of living and outstanding agreements.
According to a memorandum of understanding signed at the meeting, the transport intervention will run from November 2026 for six months and apply to workers across all levels.
The government also agreed to settle outstanding peculiar allowance arrears covering the period from May 1, 2026, through three equal monthly instalments beginning in November.
However, both parties failed to reach a consensus on the effective date for implementing the national minimum wage.
The memorandum stated that the Minimum Wage Negotiation Committee would be constituted immediately and commence discussions, while noting that disagreements remained over when implementation should take effect.
The NLC had expressed dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s handling of its demands, with the document noting that the union’s leadership raised concerns about the government’s attitude towards the issues discussed.
In response, the Federal Government reaffirmed its respect for the NLC’s right to advocate for improved working conditions and said it was making efforts to address workers’ concerns through structured interventions.
The latest agreement comes amid continued pressure on the government to introduce measures that would help Nigerian workers cope with rising transportation expenses and the broader cost-of-living crisis.
