Makinde Raises Alarm Over Weak Opposition, Warns of Democratic Risk

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed concern over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the growing weakness of opposition parties poses a serious threat to political balance in the country.

Speaking in Ibadan during a national summit of opposition leaders, Makinde pointed to an evolving political landscape where the ruling party continues to consolidate power while opposition groups remain fragmented by internal crises and leadership struggles.

The summit convened prominent political actors, including former governors, presidential candidates, and party stakeholders, with discussions centred on rebuilding unity and restoring credibility within the opposition.

Makinde cautioned that a weakened opposition undermines the very foundation of democracy. Without strong alternatives, citizens are left with limited choices, making it more difficult to hold those in power accountable.

His remarks echo broader concerns among political observers who stress that healthy competition is critical for transparency, responsiveness, and effective governance. In the absence of a credible opposition, the democratic system risks becoming increasingly imbalanced.

Deliberations at the Ibadan meeting are expected to address key national issues, including electoral integrity, economic pressures, security challenges, and governance gaps, with the goal of forging a more coordinated and effective opposition front.

Makinde further clarified that the gathering was not driven by personal ambition or aimed at any individual, but rather a collective effort to safeguard democratic principles and ensure Nigeria remains politically open and competitive.
