Meta’s $1,300 Bet: The Glasses That Could Challenge the Smartphone

Meta says its next-generation VR glasses will go on sale in Spring 2027, bringing cinema, gaming, workspaces and holographic communication into a device weighing about 100 grams.

The smartphone has dominated personal computing for nearly two decades. Meta now wants to put the next computer on your face. At its Connect 2026 event, Meta unveiled Meta VR Glasses, a radically different wearable designed to combine virtual reality, entertainment, work and communication inside an ordinary-looking pair of glasses.

The company says the glasses will go on sale in Spring 2027 for $1,299.99. At roughly 100 grams, Meta says they are about the weight of a deck of cards — dramatically lighter than conventional virtual-reality headsets. But the price is only part of the story.

Meta is pitching the device as a personal cinema, an immersive sports seat, a gaming platform and a private multi-screen office. Users will be able to watch 3D films, access immersive live sporting events and create a virtual workspace without carrying a traditional monitor. Meta says more than 75 games will be available at launch using hand gestures, with additional titles accessible through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Then comes the feature that sounds more like science fiction than consumer electronics: holographic calling. Meta says its glasses will be capable of projecting a photorealistic digital version of a person during video calls, allowing users to see the other participant as if they were physically present.

The company is also working with filmmaker James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision on immersive 3D movie experiences planned for 2027. This is not Meta’s first attempt to make glasses the next major computing platform.

Its existing AI glasses portfolio has already expanded rapidly through partnerships with EssilorLuxottica, including Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and the company’s own Meta Glasses. Meta says its broader portfolio will exceed 100 AI-glasses options by the end of 2026.

The strategy is becoming increasingly clear. Meta does not want glasses to be another gadget. It wants them to become the interface between people and artificial intelligence. That ambition, however, comes with a major obstacle: trust.

Camera-equipped smart glasses have generated growing privacy concerns over covert recording and misuse. Meta has responded with privacy measures and, in September, introduced Ray-Ban Meta Audio, a camera-free AI glasses product starting at $349.

The 2027 VR glasses therefore arrive at a crucial moment. Meta is betting that consumers will eventually prefer computing that disappears into everyday life rather than devices they constantly hold in their hands.

If that bet succeeds, the smartphone may not disappear overnight. It may simply become less important. The next screen may not be in your pocket. It may be looking back at you.
