Nigeria Files 13-Count Treason Charges Against Alleged Coup Plot Suspects

Nigeria has filed a 13-count charge of treason and related offences against six individuals accused of being involved in an alleged coup plot, according to court documents and official filings.

The defendants include a retired major general, a retired naval captain, a serving police inspector, and three other persons who are expected to be arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Prosecutors allege that the accused conspired to “levy war against the state” and engaged in acts aimed at undermining and destabilising the government. Under Nigerian law, such offences carry severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death sentence if proven.

Court documents further show additional charges linked to alleged terrorism-related activities and failure to report or prevent the suspected plot.

The case stems from investigations launched after reports in late 2025 of an alleged coup attempt involving military personnel. Authorities say several suspects were arrested during the probe, while others were reportedly declared wanted.

The defendants are scheduled to appear before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik at the Federal High Court in Abuja, with proceedings expected to commence soon. Security agencies have not disclosed full details of the investigation, as public interest continues to build around the high-profile case involving both serving and retired security officers.
